Main Monumental Art
URBAN ART AND APPLIES ART
As from 1977 the artist will realize a certain number of monumental work, mainly in France.
He will use different techniques for these achievements; mosaic, stained glass and tapestry.
1977 - MOSAIC PAVEMENT VALBONNE SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS
In 1977, Grataloup makes his first monumental urban artwork, a mosaic for the Secular Mission of Valbonne Sophia-Antipolis .
Work in Progress
He uses for the mosaic the theme of the Awakening of the Mineral which is among the first archetypes created in 1973.
1980 - WALL MOSAIC MOSQUE IN SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS
After the mosaic pavement at Sophia-Antipolis in 1977, Grataloup made a second mosaic in the same city but this time for the Mosque.
As he could not reproduce figures or representations of any kind, he will use the usual themes of the arabesque by interpreting them, in a succession and nesting of hexagons, octagons, squares, triangles, reformed and transformed into geometries polymorphs.
1982 - APPLIED ARTS CHURCH IN AJACCIO (CORSICA)
Wall mosaic in Corsica
For the Saint-Jean Baptiste church in Ajaccio, Grataloup creates a perfect set of applied arts: a ceramic on the facade of the church as well as mosaics, stained glass windows, a large tapestry woven in Aubusson and a Way of Cross.
The facade of the church is made of ceramic in a blue monochrome, with, as a drawing, a variation of a Japanese tree present in his garden of Montvinot.
Enlargement of the drawing to scale 1
The enlargement, scale 1, is made in a large room where the artist gives his courses at the E.N.S of Cachan.
1984 - STAINED GLASS IN VARENNE SAINT-HILAIRE
Stained glass window near Paris
In 1984, Grataloup makes a stained glass window for the Israelite center of La Varenne Saint-Hilaire. We can see the Mount Sinai, struck by the light emerging above the red sands of the desert.
1984 - WALL MOSAIC IN ANGERS
Wall Mosaic in Angers
Grataloup creates three mosaic panels for the Telecom Operational Division in Angers. The first panel represents the mineral world traversed by codings and optical pulses; the second a set of printed circuits emitting on a mountainous terrain and the last one leads to a generalized landscape allusion: a series of islands in the middle of the sea, under a luminous sky, the whole forming a strongly colored and very graphic whole.
1984 - STAINED GLASS IN SAINT-LOUIS HOSPITAL - PARIS
Stained glass in Paris
Winner of the contest organized by the Public Assistance of Paris, Grataloup realizes a large stained glass window of 25 m2 on the theme of the "Tree of Life", subject in perfect relation with the universe of the health and the hospital.
Wall mosaic in La Ferté-Gaucher
For this college, not far from his house in Montvinot, Grataloup will resume the theme of the "Tree of Life"already expressed through the large stained glass window of the hospital Saint-Louis (Paris). On the mosaic, a large luminous ray crosses the tree on both sides, determining the chromatic graphics.
Wall mosaic near Paris
For this mosaic of more than fifteen meters high, Grataloup will resume the theme of the series Awakening of the Mineral. In 2000 this mosaic is partially obscured by the construction of a building backing the facade of the university. It is therefore no longer visible to this day in its entirety.
Three Trees, Tree Colors
It is from the series Grands Arbres realized the same year and through an exhibition of paintings of this series at the Gallery Lavignes Bastille (Paris) that the artist will meet the architect in charge of the Development of La Défense (Paris).
He will entrust the realization of a huge mosaic (840 m2) on one of the air towers of the Esplanade of Paris La Defense which today bears the name of "Tour des Trois Arbres", named by Grataloup.
Grataloup standing on his drawing on a scale 1
Again for this realization, the drawing is made on a scale 1 in the large hall of the E.N.S de Cachan. Several months will be necessary to its realization. This is the largest drawing ever made by the artist.
"The Couple " painted canvas
In order to conceal the progress of the work to the public, a large painted canvas is placed from top to bottom of the ventilation chimney. It represents in a stylized way a canvas of the series Tantra Asana realized in 1975 "The Couple".
Galilée Tower - Paris La Défense
The "Three Trees" are now part of the huge outdoor museum that is the Esplanade de la Defense in Paris. Thousands of visitors flock there every day, sometimes carrying some precious tesserae in their pockets ... The work is also regularly restored. In 2016, a major lighting project was conducted to highlight the sculptures in a new light / day.
1989 - DANIEL BOULOGNE EDITIONS
Carpet "The Couple"
With Daniel Boulogne, Company Surface Prisme with which he just worked the previous year for the re-approval of the Galilee Tower of Paris Defense and the realization of the painting covering obscuring the laying of the mosaic, Grataloup collaborates with the edition of a lithograph from the canvas "The Couple" issued from the series Tantra Asana (1975) and then to that of a carpet. Handcrafted, it will be published in 100 numbered copies. The same year, the artist also publishes with Daniel Boulogne a calling card representing a Mount illuminated (Mountain series of Ardèche 1989).
Wall mosaic and fountain in Toulouse
In 1992, a competition is launched by the city of Toulouse for the integration of works of art in the metro line A stations. Grataloup is selected to realize a work in the station Bellefontaine. He will draw inspiration from the poetic spirit of the city, through the color of its pink stones and imagine the mountains, the ocher quarries surrounding Toulouse.
Fountain & Mineral landscape
The 70 m2 of mosaic offer a mineral aspect around an inverted pyramid glass fountain. A starry vault dominates the whole.
For the artist, it is a question of trying to create a harmony for this so-called "sensitive" station in order to restore hope, a joy by generating a reunion with nature, by the sound of the water and the graphic report, in direct relationship with the beautiful city of Toulouse.
1993 - STATION MOSAIC - PORTE DE CLICHY - Paris
RER Station - Porte de Clichy - Paris
In 1993, SNCF and the city of Paris launch a competition for the interior decoration of RER Porte de Clichy. Winner of the contest, Grataloup will be inspired by the idea of a mountain to climb and the hardness of the rock to install an Awakening of Vegetal and Mineral on the three levels of the RER station. The first level offers a vegetal declination that gradually turns into a mineral landscape to finally arrive on the third level, where we discover the top of the mountain with a rainbow.
2004 - BOEING WINGS BY GRATALOUP
The artist is participating this year in an original project around an old Boeing 747 called the "Victor Mike", the first Jumbo Air France, waiting dismantling in the hangars Marcel Dassault on the airport of Déols. Great support for contemporary creation, the aircraft will undergo a radiant metamorphosis. Wings, cockpit, gates, cabin, cell, hull, fuselage ..., each part of the plane will inspire differently many artists through 80 works. Grataloup chooses two of the Boeing's wings that he will give back to his plastic invention. On an empennage cut in half like a diptych, he shows the instability he feels in the air with a floating rope and a knot rope, no less unstable, against a background of distant landscape.
"Eve" Stained Glass in Chevreuse Priory
The city of Chevreuse seeks him for the realization of stained glasses for the former priory of the XIth century in Chevreuse. With the cooperation of the “Loire” workshops in Chartes, he creates a set of three stained glasses representing Eve, the Tree and the symbolism of the time which gets through an hourglass.
Eve, the eternal symbol of woman, is a symbolic and archetypal figuration, similar to a particular apparition that appears or disappears according to the light or the location of the spectator.
The Apple Tree
Her apple tree faces her in the Priory. Without the apple and in its monochromatic greenery, the light which crosses it reveals its foliage of which no leaf is similar.
The hourglass symbolizes the time that passes and the eternity of the moment. It is also the fate of the human being that shows his reality. It takes its source in the vibrations of the sky blue and its purpose is realized by a halo of light at the bottom of the hourglass.
2015 - WALL MOSAIC IN NANTUA
"The Spirit of the lake"
In 2015, Grataloup completes a mosaic mural commissioned by the "Association for the Grataloup Foundation" and the city of Nantua, "The Spirit of the lake".
For the realization of this mosaic of 19 m2, the artist will appeal Decomosa workshops. It is inaugurated in June of the same year.
